Short description – in case ur in a hurry:

I heard about this place first from a online friend of yummraj and then a real friend of mine also mentioned this to me. I imagined a small restaurant like maal gaadi in vyapar Kendra. We reached there to find that it was a roadside stall with two seats on an elevated platform. We blinked at each other undecided for a few seconds, looked at the guy at the counter who seems to b theth Rajasthani and took a plunge.

Within minutes we were on the elevated platform sitting face to face. It being early April evening, temperature was enjoyable. Not sure how it wud feel in summer months.

There was enough branding on the Thela that had a pain poori / gol gappa counter and also on the main counter on the elevated platform.

The menu card was lasted on the table and it had withered out but still legible. It was a one pager.

There were 3 kinds of thali and a host of a la carte options of Rajasthani food – starters, main course and desserts.

Food was excellent in general and I wud say it is one of the best Rajasthani food options in gurgaon. In Jaipur u wud obviously get better.

The worst let down in terms of food was the only non Rajasthani dish that they offered – paneer aur aloo ki subzi. Strictly non recommended. Every Rajasthani food was at least good and some were excellent.

Detailed description – in case u have the time to njoy reading:

We started our evening with wheat roundals – Baati. It was soaked in ghee as expected but the texture was perfect. It broke with a slight pressure by fingers and also by teeth. Taste was very good. I rate it 4/5.

Baati

We moved on to masala baati. This was superb. Once again an atta exterior cover that was daanedaar with a masala packed center. The food was spicy to the core but not that hot. By spicy I mean full of flavours of different Khara masalas. Seasoning was perfect and so was the texture. Super loved this and rate it 4.5/5

We njoyed the baati with panchmel dal – made from a combination of 5 kinds of deals. This dish was again flavored with nice spices that we cud feel. The textures of different daals was felt. The salt in the dish was penultimate and was perhaps the only drawback. The dish was not over- spiced / over- hot / floating with ghee. Liked it very much but for the salt. Rate it 3/5.

We also had gatte ki subzi that was just outstanding. One of the softest and tastiest Gattas I have had in a while. For the uninitiated,Gatta is a cylindrical shaped food made of paste of different lentils and spices. The gravy was lumpy, rustic and robust to taste. Full of spicy flavours. We started to sweat on the forehead after eating this and kept wanting more. Rate it 4.75/5.

We super loved the lahsun ki chutney – garlic chutney. Hot, garlicky and just too good. Had it with baati, roti and enjoyed every bit of it. Rate it 4.5/5

lahsun ki chutney (red) & mirchi ke tipore

We also liked munching on mirchi ke tipore – kind of chutney made with mirch ( chilly). Nice amalgamation of spices. Rate it 4/5.

pyaz paneer aloo ki subzi was such a disaster that we were dumbstruck. It was Inedible. It felt like being served tharra during a wine tasting session in a premium vineyard! We were so shocked that we asked the guy – is this a Rajasthani dish? He said – no. This is a local dish made on popular demand.

The spices had not cooked, the salt was all over the place, the paneer was on the harder side, the overall balance if taste was a catastrophe . We cud not eat beyond first bite and just left the rest. Rate this 0/5.

Bejar ki roti was another local rajasthani roti topped with generous ghee. Loved the soft inside and kadak outside texture of the roti. Rate it 4/5.

Once we were done, the guy told us that he also sold gulab jamun. We did not react. Then he said ‘ I make it’. Our antennas popped out. So we talked and got to know that he makes them from scratch. We ordered. We got heaven. One of the best gulab jamuns in my memory – better than the MP Purana pahalwan shop, gangaur Russell street , kishu di hatti , chaina ram and of course light years ahead of the ones available at the kinds if bikanervala, haldirams and Om sweets.

gulab jamun
gulab jamun

The gulab jamun was tight inside, thus not allowing too much ras to enter. It had a hint of salt in addition to sweetness. The center had a generous masa filling that had pista, other spices and powdered aromatic cardamom. The texture was different than the usual ones. The taste was marvellous. Rate it 4.95/5.

We tried aata churma. Unidirectional lay sweet , good texture and good to taste. Difficult to have too much of it. Liked it and rate it 3/5.

We also tried besan churma. This had flavor of besan that made it a bit better than the other one. Liked this a lot as well and rated it 3.5/5.

After completing desserts we cud not resist having gol gappas. These had a totally different texture that I have almost never encountered. The guy said that the mix had some rice powder as well. Crisp yo the core, it reminded me of tyrell’s hand made chips. Rate the crisp poori 4.5/5.

The aloo mix was excellent as well. Perfectly spiced, mashed, optimally hot. Rate this 4.5/5.

The paani was relatively less interesting and had potential to b way more chatpata. The paani served to us wud have been highly appreciated by my firang friends but it was a tad plain for our Indian palate. Rate this 2.5/5.

Overall rating of gol gappas averages out to 3.9/5.

Overall rating of Rajasthani food at khamma Ghani averages out to 4/5

Overall rating of food at khamma ghani ( including the paneer curry) averages out to 3.67/5.

Whatever b the rating I am just in love with the food of this place. Will keep revisiting for the hardcore Rajasthani stuff.

Most underrated place in Gurgaon. Love the besan choorma, the sevpoori and the golgappas.

Any visit to vyapaar kendra is incomplete without paying a visit to Khamma Ghani. 🙂
