Short description- in case u r in a hurry

We got to know about nawras from the gentleman who was driving us around town – he owns and himself drives a cab, is great at giving food tips and has general level of interest on everything – we could have a good conversation with him. In case u r a tourist in kochi, sharing his details for your reference – Mr. Abdul rashid +917594063114.

We cross checked rating on Zomato and it was very good. So decided to drop in for lunch

The facade of the restaurant is like a ship. Once inside, it was like a traditional palace – ornate detailing on everything.

The furniture was all heavy, traditional wooden furniture. The tables were so big that one had to almost scream to talk to person on other side!!!!

As we sat, we were given the menu card. The first page had a brief history of the chain.

Two things stood out in the menu card – a thali with assorted seafood and local dishes and a seafood grill.

They took us to a display of fish and seafood. There were different varieties of fish & prawns. There was a weighting scale Next to it. The fresh catch was being charged as per weight.

There was a charcoal grill which we could see in the see thru kitchen.

Menu card was comprehensive and easy to read thru.

Service was efficient and good.

Food was very good in general.

Detailed description- in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

Butter garlic king prawns – I don’t know why the the gentleman who took our order, was hell bent on crucifying his rating. He said the world about Butter garlic king prawns – the dish turned out to be very juvenile, ‘put cheese into everything and it tastes good’ kind of approach – the king prawns were Murdered by the cheese!!!! The prawns feebly made their presence felt both in taste and flavour. It was 40% cheese, 30% pepper only 30% prawn flavour and texture. Had it been done to frozen prawns, I wud get it. But who does that to fresh awesome prawns.

Prawns were not soft, neither juicy. Rate the prawn 2/5.

The usual suspects in the fish area were pomfret, black pomfret etc and we were determined not to have those – shopping super fresh pomfret and other fish regularly from Sassoon dock mumbai has made us conclude (probably that’s not true) that the best Arabian Sea pomfret is to be bought straight from the market and had before refrigerating …..

We were looking for fish that were Kerala special and not to be found in mumbai. We ended up choosing hamor and emperor fish.

We were given 2 choices of marination – orange Arabic marination and a green marination. The ‘green’ was not explained – when I asked a bit more, I was told ‘we don’t share our recipe’!!! How hilarious is that…. I want to order something and want to know what kind of flavours to expect. Green can b anything leafy and I might not b interested!!!

We were also given an interesting option – one side of the fish will b marinated ‘green’ and other side Wud b marinated ‘arabic’ so that we cud taste both.

We ordered hamor in half side green and half side Arabic

Loved the Hamor – juicy, fleshy, flaky immensely tasty. Loved it with both the flavors one after the other – green and Arabic. Rate it 4.5/5

Emperor fish we ordered full Arabic. It was just outstanding – the flakes were thinner than that of the Hamor. The thickness was also less and hence the ratio of fish meat to the crisp marinated outer layer was high. Balance of fish and marination was optimum in terms of both taste and flavour. Rate it 4.75/5

Ghee rice was simple yet excellent – flavourful local rice with complimenting flavour of ghee and perfect seasoning. Could have been a tad softer. Loved it and rate it 4.25/5

Kerala payasam was lovely. Strong flavours of jaggery with a tinge of bitter aftertaste. Perfectly soft independent grains of rice in a creamy milk and jaggery base. Rate it 4.5/5

Overall rating of food at nawras averages out to 4/5.

Surely worth revisiting
