Peter Cat (Park Street, beside Music World, Kolkata)

This is a late add to YUMMRAJ’s series called TIMELESS KOLKATA EATOUTS – reviews of Heritage Kolkata restaurants. Each restaurant has been rated as ‘Old is Gold’ or ‘Old is no more Gold’ based on the experience.

Year/decade of opening- Around Independence.

YUMMRAJ Demystifies the Legend of Peter Cat & maintains OLD IS GOLD

In a nutshell:

A retro restaurant (not by design but coz they never changed with time) with a great ambience, old school staff, good food for the prices that they charge but nowhere as good compared to the ’real thing’- be it European or Persian.

Legendary Chelo Kababs at Peter Cat

Cuisine Type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

Peter Cat has been around for decades & that speaks a lot – Restaurants open very often & close down almost as often. The ones who survive the test of time surely have something good / unique to offer.

The décor as I mentioned above is retro in today’s context – red sofas facing each other & nice lamp shades above each table. The lighting is dim overall but the lamps on each table illuminate the table good enough to see each other, have a good chat & enjoy some good food. There are two floors & the way to top floor is as grand as it can get.

The dining Hall at Peter Cat & the Waiting staff in the background

Waiting staff look Grand as well, with their sherwani suits, flamboyant headgear & pointed shoes. Most of them are however quite Old School – smooth talking, knowledgeable, not overtly attentive but attentive as well, not quite warm, talks with an air of authority interspersed with some rare smiles & I guess quite bored of doing the same job for donkey’s years…… & that shows on their face. U will enjoy the evening if u think this to b a part of the package – dining at a retro restaurant & being served by people who r enacting the past:)

The food is good in general & at the prices that the food is offered, I wud say some are excellent. However, if u compare the non- Indian dishes to the original dishes the way they r, then u might b quite disappointed.

Kobe Sizzlers ( 3rd Floor, Ambience Mall, Gurgaon)

In a nutshell:

Better than most sizzler places in Delhi NCR but nowhere near to the real taste & flavours of similar food that u get in Europe / USA.

Address & other details: Kobe Sizzlers

Meal for 2: Rs. 800 onwards

Cuisine type: vegetarian & nonvegetarian

Short Description – in case u r in a hurry:

For the uninitiated, Kobe refers to cuts of beef from a certain species of cattle, raised according to strict tradition in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. The meat is generally considered to be a delicacy, renowned for its flavour, tenderness, and fatty, well-marbled texture. This happens to be one of the most expensive meats in the world.

When Kobe Sizzlers of Mumbai opened shop in Gurgaon for the first time few years back, we were exited. A quick visit to Kobe gave mixed reactions – It was surely better than most other sizzler places around, including Peter Cat of Park Street Kolkata. However, when it came to the sauces, the right flavours, herbs, texture of steamed veggies etc, this one was shades below its Global counterparts. Must mention here that the prices at Kobe r cheaper than the others I am referring to.

The restaurant is well designed – visually. Functionally, it is a bit too crammed, to the extent that u can definitely hear 100% of the discussion on the next table. I guess there is no alternative as space is limited & people throng here all the while – queues r often to b seen.

Dining Hall of the restaurant
Dining Hall of the restaurant

The air inside is usually filled with strong burnt smell of sizzlers which is good for carnivores like us but might not b very enjoyable to vegetarians. Sound of sizzlers & the smoke coming out from it make up for the mood of this place.

This is a place good to go, eat & get out. Not really a fine dining place, not a dating place either but a kind of ‘eat good food & spend chatting time elsewhere’ kinda place.

Some members of the staff are Old School true blue restaurant Stewards & that makes the experience quite nostalgic at times. Rest of the guys appeared to b modern day restaurant waiters who r doing this for earning a living & might move on to say a Shopper’s Stop in the next job jump.

Peter Cat (Park Street, Kolkata)

Contributed by Guest Blogger Neha Manchanda.

YUMMRAJ has been to Peter Cat many times & loves the sizzlers & Chelo Kababs. In fact after eating the ‘close to original’ Chelo Kabab at a posh Iranian restaurant owned by an Iranian Lady in Boston, MA, USA, YUMMRAJ thought – Well this is out of the world but the one at Peter Cat (at 1/8 th the price) is on the same lines & very good too. So if the Boston one is 4.5/5, this one is surely 3.75/5.

In a nut shell:

The best place to have Chelo kebabs and Sizzlers

Address: Park Street, Next to Music World, Opposite KFC Kolkata

table mat at Peter cat

Peter Cat was the first restaurant where I had my first meal on landing in Kolkata some 10 years back…and the love for it continues. Step into Peter Cat and you can smell the aromatic sizzlers and see tables lined with Prawn Mocktails, Chelo Kebabs and Sizzlers (not in that order though). I love Peter Cat for its Chelo Kebabs. At any given day, at any given time (lunch / dinner) there is a bee line of people outside the restaurant waiting patiently for their turn to dig into those soft chelo kebabs and sea food sizzlers.

The Mezze Grill (Food Court, Magic Moments Mall, Kirti Nagar, New Delhi)

In a nutshell:

I loved my Mezze platter here after a long list of disappointments in Delhi NCR. I wud say as good as it can get on a food court by current standards in Delhi NCR.

The Mezze Grill

Address & other details: Mezze grill

Meal for 2: Rs. 300 onwards

Mezze platter @ Mezze Grill DEL 15, Food Court, Magic Moments Mall, Kirtinagar, New Delhi

Cuisine Type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

We chanced upon Magic Moments Mall yesterday & were pleasantly surprised by its interiors – Huge, Glitzy, large open spaces, high ceilings & so on – much better than most Malls in Gurgaon with the exception of Ambience. The Mall hosts a Huge & spacious Reliance Retail outlet (unlike thecluttered & stuffy Ambience Mall Gurgaon one), a huge ‘More’ supermarket, loads of brands, an Ice skating bar, a big kid’s play area etc. The food court named DEL15 was a revelation to me too. I think it is worth a visit to this place even if u do not stay in this part of the city.

Inside Magic Moments Mall Kirtinagar

DEL15, the Food court, is enormous – by enormous I mean enormous. Much bigger than any food court in Gurgaon. The look & feel is new & fresh. It is a mammoth squarish hall with Food counters on 3 of the 4 walls. The furniture is smartly done, lightweight modern chairs / sofas with wooden tables. There seemd to be a planned zoning in DEL15 like in food courts in other countries e.g. Food Republic, Cityplaza,TaikooShing, Hongkong.

DEL15 – Food Court at Magic Moments Mall Kirtinagar

For buying food, money has to be paid at a common cash counter – One has to buy Coupons that can be Redeemed at shops. Quite surprisingly, the purchase of coupons is strictly against cash – no debit or credit cards accepted. Though there are some restrictions, I am sure there r ways out of this. Not taking credit card is archaic in today’s world where most office goin youngsters live on cards. I am sure that the Mall owners can find a way out of this system by talking to tax experts.

I noticed quite a few diverse cuisines at the stalls run by Karim’s, Paranthas 21, Berco’s express, KFC, Subway, Haldiram’s, Vaango etc & of course Mezze Grill.

The Guy at counter of Mezze Grill was quite knowledgeable & seemed eager to answer all my questions. Not sure if rest of the staff members are like him / how he might behave in rush hour. Must mention here that we were there at 12.00 noon & the place was quite empty.

As I was talking to him, I noticed a large number of containers on the counter with names written on each. They contained the different dips that r served with Mezz food. I asked about an unusual looking salad & before I understood what was happening, he gave me to taste the salad on a tiny plastic ‘tasting’ spoon. I was feeling a bit shy but he insisted – not expected in food court. He also told me that the Chef is an Indian who has worked in Restaurants of Dubai & learnt the ‘real’ thing.

Smart seating @ Mezze Grill DEL 15, Food Court, Magic Moments Mall, Kirtinagar, New Delhi

As we started to decide on what to have we realized that they actually have a huge Menu. We chose the Mezze grill platter as it seemed to be a little bit of lot of things – Chicken Shish Taouk, Mutton CheloKabab, Grilled Fish Kabab, Rotisserie chicken, Chicken bites – all of that served with hummus, muhammara, Tzatziki, babaganoush, rice with gravy & tabouleh salad.

Dips & salads with Mezze Platter @ Mezze Grill DEL 15, Food Court, Magic Moments Mall, Kirtinagar, New Delhi

We cud not try the usual Shawarma roll / doner kabab roll as two of us were full after eating a Mezze Grill platter. (Note – Our appetite is average)

Fresc Co Restaurant (Ambience Mall, NH8, Gurgaon, Terminal 2, Domestic Airport, New Delhi)

In a nutshell:

A roller coaster experience for us & our tastebuds, an evening with moments of dissappointments & ecstasy…………thankfully eventually we walked out smiling.

The warm interiors of Fresc Co

Address & other details: Fresc Co

Meal for 2: Rs. 1200 onwards

Cuisines of the countries that are served at Fresc Co

Cuisine Type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

Day 1 (Ambience Mall):

We walked in seeing a huge poster of Pizza with seafood, took a seat, waited for the waiting staff to reach us (which incidentally took a while), & to be told that it is not being served. So we asked, ‘why do u have the picture outside?’ – pat came the answer ‘sir, we change our menu card often. We do not have this any more in the current menu’………….. was that a joke??? Isnt one supposed to replace product advertisements for which the product has been discontinued? Very frustating start.

The Huge picture of seafood pizza outside Fresc co which is not a part of the menu!!!!!

The overall service was slow, it was very difficult to make an eyecontact with the staff even though at times we saw them chatting near the counter. It felt like Castaway Tom Hanks in the island trying to wave at the aircrafts flying above to rescue him but those guys r busy flying.

Must mention that when they are at the table, they are very nice to us & in fact some of them are real smart & have good product knowledge.

What surely needs a mention is the live music. That is something for which we might revisit – performance by Gregg on Friday, Saturday & Sunday evenings.

They have some good vegetarian & nonvegetarian buffet spreads. I wud not drive from home to go & eat at that buffet again but if I am around & am hungry, will surely consider this as an option. Fresco at the Domestic Terminal however feels like an Oasis – Relatively much higher standard of food than the regular fast food kind of chains that r present at the Airport. Infact I have eaten more often at Fresco in the airport than at AmbiMall.

Excellent Sicilian Pizza at Fresc Co

In alacarte we had some cool Greek style prawns, some weird Chelo Kabab, an excellent Sicilian Pizza & a very enjoyable virgin mojito.
