Short Description – In case u r in a Hurry:
A good idea to eat food from this place is to order it at home if u happen to be in Delhi. If in NCR, then also u can go for a delivery option & what is interesting is that the delivery guy will make fresh appams & serve at ur place – I was told that the delivery boy will carry utensils & a portable stove to make the appams!!!! Else u can always drive to GK, park the car & get this delivered to ur car.
We came across Prima Kurien’s stall at Basant Mela – A handicrafts & regional cuisine fair near Chhatarpur.
The food generally was ‘too good’ & the ones which were not, were ‘just good’. Excellent quality spices were used & that was showing up in the flavours. Good ingredients overall made a lot of difference. Fresh appams really added value to the whole experience.
Detailed Description – In case u have the time to njoy reading:
Day 1
We started Day 1 with Veg Stew & Appam. The veg stew was an amazing piece of art that wud impress even hardcore carnivores. It had a thin but fragrant coconut milk based gravy that had a robust taste. The veggies had perfect texture – not too well done, not less. A straight 4.5/5 for this.
Appam was one of the best have had in Delhi NCR. I used to like the one at Swagath but this one was miles ahead. It was as soft as u cud imagine & even when cold it did not harden. Once again a 4.5/5.
Next dish was egg roast & appam. Egg roast was good but not great like some of the other dishes here. It had proper seasoning, somewhat spicy taste & good flavours. Texture was dominated by long sliced onions. Normal poultry egg was used. Organic eggs like Keggs / Bajaj Eggs wud have made a huge positive difference to the taste of this dish. I wud rate this 3/5.
Third dish that we had was Prawn moilee & appam. Once again, this had a thin gravy that had a marvellous taste & the best part was that the prawns were non rubbery & very soft. I wud give this a 4.5/5.
We got a portion of Puttu Kadla packed. This was really good.
My only other exposure to this dish was at Kerala stall, Dilli Haat. I had somewhat liked that. This one was way better & very good. The combination worked perfect. I wud give this a 4/5.
Day 2
We had covered the Basant Mela on Day 1 & went back the immediate next day to the same mela just to eat at Prima Kurien’s!!!!!!
We started with Fish Raw mango curry & appam. This was superb. Once again, this was a thin gravy with a strong taste & excellent flavours. Raw mango added a refreshing tang to the gravy. The fish was dubbed ‘fishy’ by my co-diner but I liked it. Usually happens with thin gravy & fish combo. I wud give this a 4.25/5.
We also tried the mutton mapas. This was totally enjoyable again – thin & flavourful gravy. The meat was quite tender as well. I wud give this a 4/5.
We ended our meal with Semia Payasam. This was also thin base but strong taste. Flavor of good cardamom made it even better. This was good & I wud give this a 3/5.
Overall the rating of food at Prima Kurien’s averages out to 4/5.
I wud surely consider this option for get ’together’s with friends & family. What r u thinking?
