Short description- in case u r in a hurry
We have known chef Saby (sabyasachi Gorai) for more than a decade now. We accidentally met him at an event first time, engaged in a chat that I guess both of us enjoyed, went to a Japanese restaurant named ai he was heading then, later to Olive when he was heading it, to his own ventures after he left olive group – lavash at Mehrauli, poppins hotal, hello pumpkin & so on.
The reason i mention this is that we have known chef for some time, have eaten at all his ventures not coz we like him but coz we liked the food at all his previous ones. In all of these restaurants we have eaten as normal guests – visited without intimation to chef & paid for the bill. However I might have a bit of bias as that’s human I guess. Please try to read thru it.
So when we went to mumbai for a weekend trip, Recca surely had to feature in our list.
We booked thru Zomato. We got a confirmation call from the restaurant. We confirmed & out of curiosity said ‘is chef sabyasachi at the restaurant today’. The lady said ‘sabyasachi is a designer. Our chef’s name is Saby!!!! He also owns this place!!!
Reminded me of this – we had gone to Pataudi years back. We were trying to find the house of nawab mansoor ali khan Pataudi. We asked around. No one seemed to know. Then we said ‘Saif ali’. The guy said ‘oh you should have said that earlier. The palace is across the road!!!!’. Differently funny story.
Or someone going to Kareena’s house & asking for kareena & the old watchman telling her ‘bebo lives here. Look for kareena elsewhere’!!!

Finding the restaurant on google map is difficult. Google shows perfect location but there is no signage of the restaurant at eye level. The restaurant being on first floor, the subtle signage is also on the first floor of this tall British era building. We were just unable to figure, till someone said ‘recca is above Chetana’ – beyond consciousness!!!!!

There is a lift to the restaurant but the fun is to walk up the wooden staircase which made good noise as we walked up.

The restaurant is large, well lit, had a great vibe.

The bar in the corner adds spice to the look.

The gentleman serving us, John was an excellent host. Hard to find such good people at retail / hospitality any more.

The menu card was self explanatory. So many dishes sounded so interesting that we decided to take john’s help to finalize our order.

Loved the food in general.
Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:
John suggested that we try House bread muddle. We had no idea what it was but we agreed seeing john’s confidence.

In-house baked bread with a muddle of tomatoes, garlic, olive oil & herbs. He got all this in a stone muddler & muddled it in front of us. Outstanding. Bursting out with flavors. Rate it 4.75/5

We had the muddle with excellent in-house baked breads.

The menu card had different sections. Mentioning the section in bold & italics below.
Koobideh – Mediterranean kababs
Signature lamb koobideh – handmade kebabs. Handmade meat mince kebabs were juicy & had string flavors of both meat & spices. This was served with a super thin bread (like roomali roti) that paired very well. Very good to taste. Rate it 4.25/5

Small bites
Crab & fish cakes were very good. Subtle. Full of flavors of the fish & crab meat. Felt an enjoyable , distinct sweetness due to the crab meat. Rate it 4/5

Dolmas
Aubergine dolmas we’re very good to taste. However they came in the middle of all the meats & seafood. I guess we wud have appreciated it even more, had we eaten this in the beginning. Rate it 4/5

Espetada section – from the lava grill
Fresh catch fish skewers betki fish – this was outstanding. Super juicy & flaky fish, perfectly cooked, flavors of fish complimenting the flavors of the marinade. Rate it 4.75/5

Barbecued chicken skewers we excellent. Super soft & juicy pieces of chicken. Loved it. Rate it 4.5/5

Coastal specials section
Crispy jumbo prawns is something john suggested. We wud not have ordered a deep fried dish on our own. This turned out to be excellent again. Fresh jumbo prawns, batter fried. Rate it 4.5/5

Plancha section – Spanish style hot skillet
Seafood medley plancha was really nice. The texture of each seafood was perfect. Flavors of seafood ruled. Minimal distractions. Rate it 4.5/5

Dessert
Old monk chocolate tart – this was crazy good. We just jumped on it & it was gone in few extended seconds. Old monk magic worked.

Rate it 4.75/5
Cocktails

Spiced berry mojito was a memorable drink. Full of real berries, this drink was phenomenal to taste. Loved the tart yo sweetness ratio. Rate it 4.95/5
Smoked whiskey sour – smoking was done at the table. Loved it. Rate it 4.5/5
Overall rating of food & beverages averages out to 4.45/5
Wud look forward to revisit.
