Short description- in case u r in a hurry

We first heard about Punjabee rasoi from one of YUMMRAJ’s earliest subscribers, Manmita, who insisted that we go to this restaurant & also to Swadhin Bharat pice hotel. Since we have been living in Gurgaon & Mumbai for last 2 decades, we don’t end up spending much time in kolkata. In that limited time, we tend to go to local kolkata food eateries than punjabi food ones which we get in abundance in Delhi NCR.

While we enjoyed our food at Swadhin Bharat few years back, we ended up at Punjabee Rasoi just last year, after years of it remaining in our list.

I also asked 5 of my foodie friends in kolkata about their favourite North Indian restaurant in kolkata & all of them independently unanimously (on separate occasions) mentioned this restaurant. That’s quite an interesting place to be.

The restaurant is located in a large 3 storeyed building  in a lane opposite Acropolis mall. We heard that the owners of the restaurant own the building as well.

The location is not one of those that attract organic/ natural footfall of passers by. People make an effort to go here since they have heard/ read about it or because they are repeat guests.

The interiors are a bit dark, with dim lights. A bit old school (90s) but not as retro as say  the art deco restaurants situated in buildings from the 50s or the heritage restaurants like Allen kitchen located in almost a century old building with architecture of that time.

After we ate at Punjabee Rasoi in January 23, we missed writing about it due to subsequent back to back travels. We remembered the star dish adrak ke panje from that meal. When we returned back earlier this month, we ate a few things but the same dish came up as a distinct winner by a large margin.

The menu card was not very long.

We remembered a warm & nice service from last year.

This year we went to the restaurant on a pre pujo day. No reservations were being accepted during that period owing to huge anticipated rush.

The restaurant team had started seatings guests on first floor, as per plan. We had 3 fellow diners who were 70+ in age. So we requested if we could be accommodated on ground floor. Thankfully the manager agreed, requested for some time to set up the floor & finally helped us get seat on ground floor. Highly appreciated.

Food was fabulous.

Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

Unlike in the other posts, I will not have a day 1 & day 2 section as we essentially had the same food on both occasions.

Fish tikka made with bhetki fish was lovely. Not over-marinated, not excessively spiced, the kabab was juicy, flaky & very good. Rate it 4.5/5

Murg Reshmi tikka was very good. Super soft & juicy chicken kababs perfectly cooked & charred. No excess cream on top. Rate it 4.5/5

Daal makhni was very good. It was a bit more like how this dish is served in delhi vs how it is in kolkata. The usual kolkata one looks darker & more intense. This dal makhni at Punjabee Rasoi  had less ‘grains of dal’ & a smoother texture. Rate it 4/5

Mutton makhmali kabab was really good to taste. It was made of minced mutton. The spice flavours were on the verge of over powering the meat flavours – it was a tie. I personally feel more meaty flavour is fun but that’s just my opinion. Rate it 4.25/5.

Adrak ke panje was an insanely good dish. Not just us, our septuagenarian Co-diners also had 2 helpings of the same!!! Admire the consistency of this dish every time it came to the table.

Mutton on the bone kababs, marinated well, cooked to perfection, leading you to unbelievably soft & juicy kabab on the bone. Seasoning absolutely perfect. Flavours of meat overpowered but complimented the spice flavours. Rate it 4.95/5

Kabuli naan was suggested by the gentleman who helped us with the ground floor seats. It’s a nana with a lot of dry fruits. It was very good on its own. Perhaps it goes with some vegetarian dishes. However it was just not needed with the meats/ even the daal. The normal naan pres better. Rate it 4/5.

Overall rating averages out to 4.4/5

To many more adraki panje kababs  here ……

  1. Thank you for another detailed write-up! On your next visit, I highly recommend trying their Corn Palak or Palak Paneer—you’ll be blown away by the authentic flavors. Punjabee Rasoi is proof that quality, taste, and fair pricing are the true keys to success. They don’t need a prime location, fancy decor, or paid influencers to stand out. I really hope they continue to uphold these high standards!
