Keventer’s (Clubside, Nehru road, Darjeeling)

In a nutshell:

A legendary restaurant situated once in a very beautiful spot in hill station Darjeeling, now surrounded by urban jungle, still with views of the mountains, serves very ordinary, forgettable food.

Short description – in case u r in a hurry:

The restaurant is located in a two storeyed building. The ground floor is covered and the top floor is partially covered. We chose to sit at the open terrace area.

I have heard great things about the views from Keventer’s terrace but not much of that is left due to the place being surrounded by many more buildings.

The service staff is not like the old fashioned Raj era ones – either by looks or behaviour or training. A miss, I wud say coz the joy of dining at a heritage place is also by getting a slice of those days.

The menu card was a one pager laminated card. It did not mention the specialties / what they have been always famous for. It just had a list of food items.

While here I was remembering Flury’s Park Street Kolkata and thinking how those guys have managed to retain the old world charm well, written a bit about their history etc.

Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

Pork breakfast platter – We ordered a sausage platter and the sheer amount of food on the plate was frightening. It’s difficult not to waste, in case there is a lone traveler.

The Sausage was horrible. With meat it had a packing with high proportion of wheat and that made the sausages taste like meat flavoured bread. The proportion of salt was not right. In fact I cud not make out what was right. It was the worst sausage I have had in my whole life. Rate it 1/5.

Bacon was nice and they had been prepared well. Not too brittle, not too raw. Loved it and rate it 4.25/5

Ham salami was dry, did not have intense flavours of meat, did not have a point of view. It was a filler that wud fill the stomach but not pamper the taste buds. Rate it 2/5

Eggs fry was nice. The yolk was in semi solid condition. Rate it 4/5

Meat loaf was nice. It had better balance of salt and spices. The meat flavors were somewhat there. The taste was much better than the sausage and salami. Rate it 3/5

Overall rating of food at Keventer’s averages out to ….3/5

The guys running the show need a wake up call. Selling inferior food at cheap prices at a heritage place is not the best thing to do to such a priceless brand name.
