Short description- in case u r in a hurry:
The other day I was in Orion mall food court and chanced to walk past this stall. two words attracted me like a magnet – nati Koli (country chicken). If u hv not tasted this, u Wud not understand the feeling.
With years of eating out on weekends in delhi NCR and mumbai at street food joints, restAurants and food courts – our perception is that most food courts in NCR and mumbai are filled with overpriced average food stalls and malls pay little attention to curating the mix / ensuring that they get the best names in town to the mall.
My experience in Bengaluru, chennai, kochi has been very different. Food courts are a great place to get a taste of good , small but famous shops of town. This stall turned out to b one such. Also, in contrary to popular belief , the sheer variety of South Indian and other non vegetarian food option in food courts is unbelievably high – compared to NCR and mumbai
In our numerous road trips to different places in Karnataka we have always loved eating at small joints near highways that sell nati kodi and Ragi balls. Thankfully the culture of country chicken in still alive in this part of country unlike in delhi and mumbai where refrigerated poultry chicken is the only choice.
Now u know why nati Koli attracted me in like a magnet.
The food was very reasonably priced. There was normal chicken biryani at ₹100 also!!!!
Went back next day for another meal. Needless to say loved it that much on day 1. Day 2 was great as well.
Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:
Day 1
The nati kodi (country chicken/ desi murgi) Donne biryani was just too good. Donne means a bowl made of dry leaves. The biryani is served in this bowl. Traditionally street vendors used to sell it like this and that’s how the name got famous.
The biryani has Short and fat grains of rice that were quite social (they would always stick to each other), masalas were spreading their aromas while not subduing that of ghee. curried country chicken was added in layers in the biryani. A boiled egg was placed on top.
The meat was super YUMM, soft but chewy (in an enjoyable way) and somewhat juicy as well. The taste of chicken could not get better. Prices were small to make sure it cooks well.
The biryani was served with a thin chicken gravy in the side. The gravy was Super tasty. Such authentic and good food is Not too easily served in food courts as I mentioned b4. RAte it 4.75/5
We also went for Mutton thali. It had mutton Saru (gravy), rice roti (since my co-diner was not fond of Ragi ball), biryani rice, mutton dry, boiled egg.
The mutton Saru was a thin, robust & rustic gravy with strong flavours of meat and spices. The taste was excellent. The meat pieces were very good. Rate it 4.5/5
The mutton sukka was a bit more sukka than enjoyable. I have had sukkas that have much more juicier meats. Taste was very good. Texture was soft n chewy. Rate it 3.75/5
Rice roti was thick, soft and nice.
Overall rating of this dish averages out to 4.1/5
Nati Koli sukka was outstanding. Small pieces of country chicken, robust flavor of meat, somewhat juicy, flavours of masalas- just perfect. People from other tables were frowning seeing us licking fingers!!! Rate it 4.75/5
Day 2
Mutton pepper fry – super soft pieces of mutton with fat in it, robust flavours of the meats and masalas, hot, spicy, unputdownable !!! Rate it 4.95/5
Nati koli ( country chicken) Saru (curry) was so good that we licked off the gravy till the last drop. !!! The meat was Soft but not falling off the bones. The taste was excellent and the meatiness profound. Gravy was daanedaar and a bit thick. Flavours were unique and super enjoyable Rate it 4.75/5
Overall rating of food at this stall averages out to 4.7/5
