Short description- in case u r in a hurry
Dosa coffee popped up on my Instagram feed for some time now & on few occasions I ordered food from them for lunch at my office in south Delhi. Was very impressed at two things – the packaging & the crispness of dosa even after travelling from kitchen through Zomato.

Delhi NCR now has a scarcity of good South Indian Udupi style restaurants after the fall of Saravana Bhawan. For some reason, Murugan Idli & Sangeetha of Chennai or someone similar to Vinayaka Mylari of mysuru have not yet ventured into this North Indian land of opportunities. We are starved for top class South Indian vegetarian food. So when I saw an Instagram post about Dosa coffee restaurant in Connaught Place , we decided to visit.
The location is very near the saravana bhawan, CP, infact on the same stretch.
Dosa coffee started in kolkata. The story is fascinating. Please read details in the picture below.

The restaurant has a huge dining hall right from the entrance, an open kitchen in the middle & washrooms at the end.

The decor is very nice & blends very well with the theme. The seats are very comfortable. A good place to hang out with family (including the elderly).

The menu card is a 2 pager with a list of items. No detailed description of the items.

The staff members (we interacted with multiple people) were extraordinarily well behaved. Some of them were slightly fumbling with the Dravidian pronunciations (challenges not limited to retroflex sounds), I guess will get better with time.
Initially the staff members came on their own when we sat. Multiple people came to ask for order. While food order was getting punched in the tablet, water etc was dependent on the staff’s memory. Ordered a can of aerated drink. The boy forgot to place order. etc. etc
There is difficulty to call staff as the rush increased as they are not yet in the habit of eye contact with guests. Often there were standing in a group near the open kitchen & chatting with each other.
To summarize, I would say that the staff was a mix of well-intended, well-behaved green horns & few borderline experienced & knowledgeable staff. Time will train them or should the boss take the pain to bring the newbies up to speed?
The couple who own the franchise of Dosa Coffee for Delhi NCR were themselves on the floor. They took care of the customers exceedingly well, as if we were guests at their home. Hats off for such a beautiful gesture. Respect.
Washroom floor full of water after a staff member left the washroom. The Seat of the commode had been wrongly fixed by the plumber, leading to the lid constantly falling off if used as a male urinal & the seat tending to fall on the back of a person seating. One end coming off!!! Quite bad. Needs fixing.
The food was good. The coffee was a disaster. Am sure someone messed with the formula of coffee here. If what is written about the food research by the founder in the introduction, such low standards are impossible in the original dosa coffee menu.
Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

Thindi podi idli was very soft & had flavourful & nice podi sprinkled on top. This came with 3 kinds of chutneys – white red & green. All the chutneys were very good in terms of texture & balance of taste. Rate the idli 4/5

Medu vada was really food. The outer layer was really very crisp – don’t remember having it this good in delhi NCR. The fermented flavour was less as compared to the medu vada at Murugan Idli, Madurai. Also, full black pepper in many good southern Indian restaurants add a certain twist to the vada. That was missing. Sans the comparison, this was one of the best medu vadas I remember having in Delhi NCR in recent years. Rate it 4.5/5

Malkapodi masala dosa was served as an inverted cone. Potato masala was served on the side in a bowl.

The podi was really very good. It was in very good quantity, making it unmissable in every bite. However when that much amount of lentil (podi) enters the mouth, the moisture reduces. The moisture is usually provided by ghee. That hit was missing. So the mouthfeel was dry.
To recap, crisp outer layer, soft inner layer thick dosa with a podi layer inside, a bit too dry in the mouth. Good to taste. Good balance of seasoning. Rate it 3/5
Buttermilk was good to taste. The balance of salt & sour was good. Rate it 3/5

I had ordered Mysore ghee roast dosa through Zomato earlier & was very impressed with it. The one that we were served at the restaurant was excellent too. Super crisp outer layer & a soft fluffy inside. Rate it 4.25/5

Loved the sambhar served with all dishes. Much better than in most places in Dekhi NCR. Real vegetables, cooked from scratch, no masala mix etc. rate it 4.25/5
Filter coffee was an apology for South Indian filter coffee. I told the lady to get it ‘strong’ for me, as is the practice in the South of India. The lady gave me a blank look. What came had a ‘burnt coffee’ smell, had no body strength & was like drinking thin hot milk with a flavour of bent coffee. Really bad. Was remembering the lovely coffee at Brahmin’s coffee bar, Bengaluru. Rate it 1/5

Overall rating of food at Dosa (sans) coffee averages out to 3.4/5
Will I go back here? Yes, if desperately craving South Indian vegetarian snacks. Coz the rest are even worse. Else no.
The Dosa Coffee post is wonderfully detailed! Loved how you highlighted flavors and ambiance, it makes me want to visit Connaught Place immediately.
