Short Description – In case u r in a Hurry:

When I heard the name of this place from someone, I did not really get it. Wiki came to my rescue. It said – Ghent is a large city in Belgium, home to the fourth largest population of Belgium. This city, located in the Flemish region of Belgium, became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe in the Middle ages – Ghent was the biggest city in Europe after Paris; it was bigger than London, Cologne, or Moscow. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university.

Di Cafe Ghent is partly owned & run by a Belgian lady Kristina, from Ghent & another gentleman from Australia. I got to know this when I saw ‘ Australian & Belgian food’ in the menu card & asked – Is that a spelling mistake – Austria misspelled Australia?’ The answer was ‘Since the other co-owner is from Australia, the menu card will start to have some Australian dishes as well. Currently it is mostly Belgian’.

The cafe has a small indoor cafe seating & a bit of bar seating as well. The indoor part is very nicely done with lots of wood all over – in furniture, on the wall, in the ceiling etc, the way u see in many cafes in Europe. Music is peppy but non intrusive so that one can enjoy a nice chat as well. The staff members are better than in most cafes in Delhi NCR – They are knowledgeable about the product & handle questions well.

The owner can be often seen in the Restaurant supervising – his presence surely makes a difference & that shows in the high standards of food & beverages. He had come himself come to serve a dish to us & inspite of his humility, it was not difficult to guess that he was the owner. On the way out we asked him about this & he confirmed. We then has a long & nice chat with him.

Detailed Description – In case u have the time to njoy reading:

We started our evening with a salad called Klokke Roeland – It had Rucola, Goat cheese, agrodolche dressing, parma ham & thin slices of green apple. In case that was too much of a tangent, here is what they meanRucola is the leaf in this salad. It is similar to rocket salad leaves, Agrodolce is a traditional sweet and sour sauce in Italian cuisine. Its name comes from “agro” (sour) and “dolce” (sweet). Agrodolce is made by reducing sour and sweet elements, traditionally vinegar and sugar. Goat cheese is cheese made from goat milk. A higher proportion of medium-chain fatty acids in goat’s milk (as compared to Cow’s milk) contributes to the characteristic tart flavor of goat’s milk cheese.

Klokke Roeland was served in a bowl with a mix of Rucola Leaves, Goat Cheese & parma ham with the dressing added. When served, it looked like any other salad that everyone else serves, but tasted amazingly good. The salad was pre mixed, unlike in the US, where in most cases the ingredients are served separately & people made their own salad. The salad here was made fresh. The choice of ingredients was made keeping in mind the spectrum of Indian taste I guess. The combination of all the four ingredients was very interesting & the balance of sweet, sour & salt was perfect. The interplay of taste & flavours between diff ingredients was the fun part – every bite potentially tasted different due to the uneven mix. Best part is that the leaves did not taste ‘leafy’. Loved this & wud give this a 4.5/5.

For the next dish, we chose a Panini called Claus – It had Parma ham, parmesan cheese, rucola, & mayonnaise. This panini was not at all like the soft breaded Paninis that u get at the likes of Costa Coffee & other cafes in India. It had a Crispy outer crust & a soft inside filling that was simply awesome. It had perfect flavours, taste & seasoning. Overall, the dish was very simple, very effortlessly made & just too good. It was surely much more than expected & hence again gets a 4.5/5

We enjoyed a banana & orange smoothie along with the food. I am not a big fan of banana drinks but this one was good. The flavours of orange & that of the banana were equally felt. Liked it but was not overwhelmed by it & hence wud give this a 3/5.

Post this we went for Lieve – spinach & ricotta ravioli with sage butter sauce. This was a vegetarian dish & the server warned us that this will be ‘non spicy’. We said we want to try this as long as the taste is good. Not all good food needs to be ‘spicy’. For the uninitiated, ‘sage’ here refers to a leaf & ‘sage butter sauce’ is made by sage leaves & butter.

The dish was of course ‘non spicy’ but that did not make us uneasy for even a moment. The moment it landed on our tastebuds, they applauded – super soft ravioli with strong flavours & taste of spinach. The sauce was too good as well & like little kids, we finished the sauce off till the last drop with the garlic bread. I wud give this dish a 4.25/5.

The last dish fro the evening was our dessert – Vlaanderenstraat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It turned out to be chocolate mousse blended with chocolate sauce & whipped cream flavoured with Belgian Coffee. The super rich & creamy dessert was served in huge quantity in a Glass!!! Overwhelming to taste but just too big a portion for 2 people. I guess 4+ people can do justice to this mammoth outsatanding creation of art. It gets a 4.5/5 again
