Short Description – in case u r in a hurry:

In continuation to our exploration of Cyber Hub, we landed up at Made in Punjab. I had heard that this is a restaurant by Celebrity Chef Jiggs kalra’s group company. Their earlier venture Punjab grill is now with Lite Bite Foods & Made in Punjab is a new Punjabi food joint by Jiggs Kalra & his company.

Cyber Hub - an excellent place , to hang out, eat out.

The show window of the restaurant has few sigris with live flames on it. The entrance has a sizeable & beautiful reception area managed by two ladies. As one walks in, there r a series of tandoors (covered with shiny copper colored metal) on the left.

The restaurant has a huge, beautiful, spic and span, nice ambience. There r nice cubicles & there r mid hall seating as well. When we entered the Dining hall, instrumental music was playing. Later it made way to Indian classical vocal. I quite liked the music.

They have a buffet lunch with 45 + items (I was told) & that costs approx. Rs. 650. They also have a huge (in physical size) menu card with decent no. of items. Not too much, not too less. We opted for A la carte.

Service was impeccable – right from the reception to the Manager coming & talking to us to our server who was a unique creature (in a good way). There r not too many waiting staff left with whom one can have a good eye to eye same level conversation beyond transactional stuff. We enjoyed this conversation for sure. He was very warm & made sure we had a great time.

Loved almost all the food except a little few. We were at one point saying ‘How is it possible that so many dishes r so good consistently’.

Detailed Description – In case u have the Time to NJOY reading:

As we waited for the food, we were given a complimentary Pani puri. The puri was placed atop a shot glass that had the Pani. Sprouts and masalas were placed at the center of the puri. One had to just pour the contents of the shot glass to the puri & gobble it. Very good puri that was crisp perfectly, Pani was chat pata and far from bring toned down. Loved it & rate it 4.25/5

There were an assortment of papads & chutneys that were served. Notable was the texture of papads – perfectly uniformly crisp.

We started the meal with Salmon tikka. I guess it is a marvellous way to introduce an Indian to salmon for the first time, given the strong smell of salmon. What this fusion dish does is that it gives a taste of good but different fish tikka masala made with a very good fish that has a taste and character of its own.

Hardcore salmon lovers might be dissappointed as the strong flavor and taste of salmon is pushed back a bit by the strength of Indian masalas. It is I guess great for everyone else. The fish was juicy and soft inside , had charred outer ends. Super duper tasty. Taste of fish and masalas were felt. I rate this dish 4.5/5.

Tandoori chaap is what we ordered next. It looked almost like mutton burrah and very different from the chaap sold in traditional Muslim eateries in Kolkata.

This was a dry dish. The meat was super soft and surprisingly a bit juicy as well. The masalas had not penetrated within but salt had. The thick layer of masala outside was so rustic and robust that every bite hit a good mix if masala and meat. The meat was falling off the bones at the slightest provocation. The usual struggle of tearing meat in a burrah from its bones was not there in this dish. Loved it again & rate it 4.5/5

We started our main course with Daal was excellent as well. Slow cooked over long time with spices, the daal had a thick base in which the grain of the daal cud b felt. The dish had perfectly balanced seasoning – salt, spices, hotness and sour & great taste. Loved it again & rate it 4.5/5

Sarson da saag – It was one of the best I have had recently. Rustic, robust taste & flavor, hotness prevailed on the tongue even after the food is over. The saag was not really made into a fine paste & that added unevenness & hence great texture to the saag. Khara masala was used. I guess something like khoya / cream was use to finish it. Ghee was there in the dish but was not overflowing. Just loved it & rate it 4.5/5

The last dish for the day was Saag gosth. Till this juncture we were surprised at our dream run and were saying ‘ how can everything be so good’ and then the mutton pieces came. They were cooked separately and added to the gravy. The pieces of meat were very soft but they were old (smelled of non-freshness). A situation that I get disgusted about. The Mutton pieces get 0/5.

The gravy was a tasty and sophisticated one – no khara masala, no on the face taste but a smooth spiced up one. Liked it so much that we finished the full gravy even though I kept aside the smelly pieces. Since the meat was not cooked together with the gravy, its effect did not reach the gravy. Liked the gravy & rate it 4/5. Overall rating for this dish averages out to 2/5.

When asked for feedback we gave the feedback that meat was smelly. The restaurant insisted & finally succeded in giving us 4 gulabjamuns ‘on the house’ to compensate for the dissatisfied dish.

The gulab jamuns were unidirectionally sweet. They had no special taste or flavor. I rate those average & hence 2/5.

We enjoyed our main course with freshly made tawa roti with lots of butter on it. A roti station was brought to our table & the roti chef was mking phulkas one by one as & when we wud finish the previous one – felt like we had been to someone’s house. Very interesting experience.

We NJOYed the food with Chhanch that was pretty thick, almost like normal lassis, unlike original chaanch served in villages. However the chhanch was perfectly spiced and had a great balance of taste between sour and salt. Mint paste was also added and that gave a mild greenish color. Loved the drink as it is and it acted as a good palate cleanser as well. Rate it 4.5/5.

Overall rating of food at Made in Punjab averages out to 4.1/5.

I surely will revisit this place with friends & family, specially expats coming to Gurgaon / those visiting us form other cities in India. Look forward to trying out many more items on the menu.

Day 2:

Repeated quite a few of the above dishes + tried rabri jalebi. Awesome. Tiny 1 inch diameter jalebis plonked atop a bed of mildly sweet intense thick rabri. Wow. Loved it.

    1. Hi,
Thanks for asking the question. Reason coz Chaap is a very popular dish in Kolkata – In my perception it is more popular there than in Dilli.

      thanks

    1. Hi Arpit. I checked. I did not seem to hv that problem. Did u try from mobile / laptop? Once in a while that has happened to me in the past when signal was bad. Can u kindly retry & let me know?

      thanks

    1. Hi Amitabh. I used to put it earlier. However they change & of course I am unable to update due to lack of info. This caused problems with some readers. So I stopped.

  1. We visited the Restaurant on 23rd February and ordered for Bhatti Paneer; Malai Kofta; Lachha Paratha. Bhatti Panner was absolutely good. Malai Kofta was served in yellow gravy. Kofta was sticky after some time. The Lachha paratha (Ajwain) served was half cooked and Lachha Paratha (Pudina) was burnt wondering what to do and ultimately we decided to leave the place and asked them to settle our bill. The wash towel served was in blue pottery and edges were broken. It’s really surprising that the restaurant associated with the name of JIGG KALRA can serve food of such taste and in broken crockery, then, its better to avoid.
