Short description- in case u r in a hurry:

A friend of mine who was born and brought up in chennai introduced me many years back to Murugan. I had been with him several times to the Besant Nagar outlet. Was floored then. Am very impressed yet after a gap.

Furniture

This time when we planned a trip to chennai , Murugan had to be on the list. We slotted it for breakfast.

The restaurant had simple yet very well maintained and clean interiors.

Small shop in the corner

Service was super efficient and fast. Guys were constantly going around the tables, getting additional orders etc. The chutney boys were coming back in regular intervals to refill chutney.

Food was marvellous.

Chutneys

Detailed description- in case u want to njoy reading:

As we sat, banana leaves were laid out on our tables. On them the server kept giving us different kinds of Chutneys

Stainless steel glasses

Pudina chutney – very different from the North Indian green chutney served with kebabs etc but nice and enjoyable with the plain idli.

Mallige chutney and Tomato chutney were very enjoyable.

Coconut chutney was thick and nice.

Plain idli – this was softer than the softest of idlis I have had. There was a mild fermented feel to it. The idlis were not tight but not too fluffy either. Rate it 4.5/5

Podi idli was lip smacking good. Idli dipped in ghee and covered with Podi (a lentil, chilly and masala powder). The powder was not smooth but grainy and that did the magic. The taste of the Podi was just too good. Rate this dish 4.75/5

Podi idli

Podi utthapam was another unexpected hit. Crisp on the outer side, somewhat soft within, this utthapam with Podi layer on the top surely stood apart. Just loved it and rate it 4.5/5

Sweet Pongal was a marvel. It was served in beautiful small heavy brass bowls. The taste was intense – flavours of jaggery and coconut made its presence felt along with that of camphor. Unforgettable. Rate it 4.95/5

Medu vada was very good but I guess it came to us in the wrong order. Our mouth was full with strong flavours of Podi and then came this guy – mild dish with full flavours of daal and whole black pepper. The fry was not super crisp on the outside like in Many other places. Rate it 4.25/5

Ghee Podi masala dosa was very good but we surely liked the one at Sangeetha two notches better.

The dosa was crisp , had flavours of ghee. Podi made its presence felt. The aloo of the masala was good to taste too. It was placed inside the dosa – earlier I remembered that they used to serve separate. Rate the dosa 4.25/5

We loved our Strong filter coffee. Full of flavours and full bodied strength. Rate it 4.5/5

Overall rating of food and beverages at Murugan idly averages out to 4.5/5

Look forward to more such meals here. Look forward to have Murugan idli in mumbai and delhi as well.

  1. Just now we had our Tiffin at Murugan Idli Shop in T. Nagar. Horrible experience. Very poor quality stuff. Waiters are quarreling & shouting in frint of customers. Indeed very bitter experience. We are not new ti this Chain restaurant! We already visited Branches in Parry’s Cirner, Trichy, Coimbatore Highways etc. What is wrong with this management.
