Short description- in case u r in a hurry:
It was one of those strange evenings when we did not ‘book’ a place for a Saturday evening. Ended up at a popular eatery that turns into a pub in the evenings. 2 hour waiting. Looked around – 90 minutes …., whatever.
Suddenly we remembered K&K on our pending list and there was no turning back.
The restaurant is located in ITC grand Maratha, a beautiful property of ITC hotels in mumbai.
The restaurant had simple seating. There was nothing memorable in the decor.
The serving guys were good in general.
Menu card was small and it had , among other dishes, the best dishes of dum pukht and bukhara, delhi.
We had a great time here and quite a culinarily nostalgic one…..(were remembering our delhi days)…..
Detailed description- in case u hv the time to njoy reading:
Tala gosht was an outstanding, usual but u usual dry tawa mutton dish. The meat was soft but chewy and juicy. Loved the mingling of flavours of ghee, meat and spices. The hands cud not stop transporting this meat from plate to mouth. It was a moment of joy for the senses. Rate it 4.75/5
Jhinga dum anari showed up as ‘our specialty’ in the menu card. So went for it. We like good cheese with unusual flavours at times but essentially we are not a big cheese fan.
As the dish was being discussed at the time of ordering, we realized that There Wud b a layer of cheese on top of large prawns, garnished with anar ( pomegranate). That was quite a shock. That’s the last thing we expected in what we had assumed to be a North Indian restaurant.
However we decided to go for it assuming it Wud b different and good since it is among the most popular. For some reason we had temporarily forgotten Mumbai’s extra love for cheese (we were even served ‘Chinese noodle’ with cheese on one occasion at a restaurant!!!).
As we took a bite into the dish, we realized we had made a wrong call. This is what I Wud call the murder of a legendary prawn. To cut back losses, we totally removed the cheese layer and enjoyed the prawns. Mind blowing they were. The layer of cheese actually had enabled the prawn to retain its juices and the texture. Unbelievable texture, full blown flavours and super YUMM to taste. Rate the prawn 4.95/5. Rate the cheese cover 2/5. Overall rating of the dish averages out to 3.5/5.
We ordered Buttermilk as a palate cleanser. It was very good to taste and served its purpose well. Rate it 4.25/5
Gosht dum pukht biryani was something we cud not stop ordering – we have had fond memories of having the best Awadhi dum biryani at dum pukth, delhi and kolkata.
The biryani lived up to its expectations. As soon as the lid of the handi opened, the whole area was filled with the aroma of the biryani.
Long independent aromatic grains of rice, flavours of ghee, super soft melt in the mouth rice and memorable pieces of mutton that were outstanding as well. The meAt pieces were super soft, juicy, had full blown meat flavours and were just too good to taste. Our taste buds were dancing with joy after having this dish. Rate it 4.75/5
For dessert we had Kulfi falooda. This was served in mumbai style – in a glass. The kulfi was super intense, creamy and very very tasty. Sweetness was not too much – very balanced. Super Loved the dish. Rate it 4.5/5
Overall rating of food at kababs and curries averages out to 4.4/5
Wud surely revisit to try out other dishes here.
