Short description- in case u r in a hurry

This restaurant has been on our list for more than a decade but for some reason or the other it never happened.

So last Saturday evening we reached there around 8:30 PM . We went to the gentleman sitting just at the entrance of the eatery. He said it will take 30 mins waiting to get a seat. We said ‘do we have to tell our name & number to be in the queue’. He said ‘not needed. I will remember’.  Wow.

The facade of the restaurant is so narrow that it might appear as a small roadside stall. However on closer look one can see a small counter & a normal sized door (home) leading to a room in the ground floor with wooden chairs & tables & a staircase to 1st floor.

As we walked in, we realized two men were standing next to the ‘counter’ with many vessels full of curries.

The ground floor was full. As advised, We walked up along the narrow staircase to the first floor. We got a seat for two, facing the staircase. So everyone who walked upstairs kind of ended up doing eye contact with us & then with goof on our plate.

The boy serving us was very enthusiastic. He took care of us very well.

We tried two curries with roti. Loved them both & finished them till the last drop.

Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

When we were waiting fuwnstaurs, we saw the menu. There were quite a few items. Do we asked the gentleman down stairs ‘which one is best’. He said everything is good I this small menu. We asked ‘which one is your personal recommendation? we will follow that blindly.’ He said ‘saag mutton’

We ordered Saag mutton. The gravy turned out to be really good. The strong saag flavour had been overtaken by the meat & spice flavours. However, together they put up a great performance. The seasoning was perfect. The taste was really nice. The texture was mildly grainy & thick.

Meat pieces were fabulous – super soft, perfectly cooked, great to taste.

Rate it 4.5/5

We also ordered  Keema kaleji. This felt like good old keema – uneven, not daanedaar, but as if hand minced. The texture felt very good in the mouth. The kaleji (goat liver) was perfectly cooked & it was soft & not brittle.

The overall taste of this dish was very good. Rate it 4.5/5

We enjoyed both these dishes with hot crisp tandoori rotis.

Look forward to getting back here to try their roganjosh (which is not the Kashmiri one that you are thinking) which we were told is dahi mutton curry. The kababs we saw on the plates of other guests also looked good. Have to try those….

  1. Must have last visited the place 40 years ago. Doesn’t appear to have changed but for the AC.
When I was in college 50 years ago, Bappe and Kake were relatively up market compared to the Pandara Road eateries. Now the Pandara Road eateries that serve similar food are relatively up market. Wonder how and why the CP eateries, despite their superior location, let opportunity pass.

    1. Thanks for sharing your memory. I guess it’s the change in look & feel & larger space that helped the pandara road restaurants becoming more upmarket.

  2. Try the butter chicken also, it’s a different variety, a slightly different flavour but nice with the saaf meat playing a counter flavour.
