Very enjoyable Asian Cuisine with a good variety, cool ambience & good Hospitality

Cool ambience at The Republic of Noodles Restaurant, Lemon Tree Aurangabad

Address & Other Details: Lemon Tree Hotels

Meal for 2: Rs 1000 onwards

Cuisine Type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Short Description – In case u r in a Hurry:

Though we have stayed in Gurgaon for many years now, we have not been to the Gurgaon or Delhi Lemon Tree Hotels. Our first brush with Lemon tree was at Aurangabad & this is where we saw a board that mentioned ‘winner of Times Food Guide Best Asian Food’ award. I was surprised. Times Food Guide in Aurangabad?? Checked with the Hotel Lobby & then came the story – The Delhi chapter had won the Times Food guide award twice. Since the menu & recipe is same across all the Republic of Noodles restaurants, they had put up such an advertisement.

Nonetheless we decided to give it a try & we were not at all dissappointed. Infact we loved the experience at this place.

Top view of poolside restaurant & open kitchen

The Restaurant at the Aurangabad property is pool-side. So the ambience was very good. Though there is a little bit of electric lighting in the corner, the real light for the dining table is just a candle – So even without planning for a ‘candlelight dinner’ u inadvertently end up in one.

the dining plates

The kitchen was an open kitchen on the poolside. One can go & take a peek at whats cooking. The service was reasonably on time & the guys serving were quite warm & knowledgeable.

We went for the dishes which showed up as Chef’s recommendation in the menu card. Loved the food. Honestly it was much better than my expectations. I cannot vouch that the dishes were 100% authentic but they were really good to taste.

Luchi & Chholar daal (Bengali style Chana Daal with Maida Poori)

This is a part of the series ……. For the Chef in u

Contributed by YUMMRAJ’s favourite Chef ANONYMOUS

Super easy to make & Super good to eat……………

Luchi & Chholar Daal is a typical Bengali traditional breakfast.

Luchi & Chholar Daal

Soak a cup of Chana daal (Chholar daal) for one hour. Add salt & turmeric & boil it in an open vessel till just done. Do not overcook it / do not pressure cook.

Boiled Chholar (Chana) Daal

Heat 2 tablespoon of Cow milk Ghee (clarified butter made from cow milk) & lightly fry  chopped coconuts, cashewnuts & raisins as shown in the picture.

sliced coconuts, cashew & raisins fried in ghee

Drain & keep aside.

Mix together ginger paste (1 teaspoon), Haldi / Turmeric powder (1/2 teaspoon), Jeera / Cumin powder (1 teaspoon) & Red chilli powder to taste (I use 1/2 tea spoon). Add 2 teaspoon water to dilute the paste a bit & mix well.

the fried spices post addition of water

In the remaining Ghee (after frying the coconut, cashew etc), add ½ teaspoon whole jeera (cumin seed). Add the above-mentioned paste once the cumin seeds start crackling. Fry the mixture continuously till the ghee separates.

The hand painted wall at the entrance of Abhijeet

On the left, there is a new signboard with the name written on metal. As u enter there is an open air section that looks old as well. However as u cross this area u walk into a fairly large room that is surely new & well maintained – the indoor dining hall.

This is a pure vegetarian joint with Maharashtra food, South Indian, Rajasthani food & Punjabi food being offered. I saw some vegetarian ‘Chinjabi’ food as well on the menu.

The menu card looks impressive from outside with a picture of the restaurant. The way the menu card is organized reminded me of my travels to China – Photographs of food along with the menu card. Interesting – Not too many rastaurants do this even today.

The Chinese style menu card

The service is fast & good. The guy waiting on us patiently replied to a volley of questions that I had – all with a smiling face. The discussion was mainly about Local food.

He suggested a starter that we found to be good & in consultation with him we ordered the main course. Liked some & loved some – thankfully were not dissappointed by any.

Cuisine Type: Vegetarian

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

Aurangabad is the base town for Shirdi, Ajanta, Ellora & Daulatabad. So in case u r travelling to any of these places u need to stop over at Aurangabad.

Strangely, if u ask people / search the net, there r not too many convincing answers that u get. Autowallahs & taxi rivers tend to take u to expensive multi cuisine restaurants who r generalists – do not specialize in any ocal cuisine.
I was lucky to have a foodie friend who knew well about Aurangabad & hence it was easier. Be it vegetarian food or the Mughal inspired Nonvegetarian food, I was able to have some very good meals.

Yagya is a small simple spartan eatery that serves only vegetarian unlimited thali @ Rs. 130 per person.

the simple interiors

This restaurant has been around for 25 years now. The staff members speak Marathi & little bit broken Hindi. They are very warm though & treated us as if we were guests at their home.

A signboard outside the restaurant proclaimed – Traditionally moderate, Moderately traditional!!!!! I did not understand that part though.

the strange signboard

Some locals say that their ‘aunt’ or ‘grandma’ can cook better – I am sure they can. But for a tourist looking for good vegetarian food, this is an excellent place to drop by for some ‘home like’ tasty & good food.

The thali was outstanding – None of the Food courts in Delhi NCR serve such a good thali at even double the price of this. As compared to Haldiram’s / Bikanervala etc , this one is much simpler & closer to very good cooked home food & hence less oily & less heavy but very tasty.

Address & Contact Numbers:

Address & phone numbers – In case u want to call for directions

Meal for 2: Rs. 400 onwards

Cuisine Type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Short Description in case u r in a hurry:

On hearing that we are off to Aurangabad (base town for Shirdi, Ajanta, Ellora & Daulatabad) , my foodie friend Rakesh Kumar told us ‘As u drive on the Baijapur road Jalgaon road, u wud come across local dhabas on both side where u wud get gaonran chicken, freshly cut & made as per ur taste. Tell them – half dry & half curry’.

Lipsmacking Dry desi chicken at kalim’s Moonlight

With this info in hand we set out to this place, to realize that the road is also referred to as Mitmita Nasik Road. We walked into Kalim’s Moonlight Dhaba. The Dhaba looked neat & clean from outside & it was actually very well maintained inside as well. Well done lawns, outdoor seating, covered seating, Toilet facilities, parking facilities etc.

the entrance to the dhaba

They serve all kind of North Indian Dhaba food including vegetarian & also South Indian food.

the dining hall

The people at the Dhaba were also very nice.

The story that u shud not miss:

As we entered, we noticed many gaonran (desi) chicken playing around in the lawn. One of the hens had laid an egg & was hatching it in a corner.

Gaonran chicken roaming around in the lawn

When we said we came for Gaonran chicken, the first question that I was asked , stumped me. He said – ‘which one’. I said ‘What do u mean’. He said ‘ U choose from the ones that are roaming around. We will catch it & cook for u’. I was like ‘whhhaaat?’ in my mind. I realized quickly that this is what my friend had told but it did not seem so explicit then.

I said – ‘I have no idea. Pls choose one for me that is so good that we remember u for long’. The gentleman looked at me, frowned, thought for a while & consulted with one of his aides. Then they decided on a red colored chicken that was in one corvner of the lawn.

This is the best example of ‘Free range’ chicken that I have ever seen. For the uninitiated, free range means ‘Chicken that are not caged & kept in natural conditions. They are also kept on natural diet – not artificial medicines & hormones’.

What happened next was something I will never forget. A whistle by the gentleman led to all employees of the Dhaba descending on the lawn & then began the chase. The postures looked like fielders in cricket or like in a game of kabaddi. The men started approaching the hen slowly. For some time the hen did not quite understand what was happening. As soon as it understood , it fluttered & flew up to a tree. They shaked the tree, it flew down to a bush. They ran into the bush. The hen escaped from the other end of the bush. They surrounded the bush from all sides. The hen flew out last moment fluttering. This kind of activity continued for quite some time with eight men chasing one chicken. Then the men grouped together to strategize & applied some trick. Something did not work out well – so they had a little 30 seconds fight (subdued, in low voices) I cud see accusations flying here to there questioning each other’s mental prowess & hunting skills. …………… & at last after almost 10 minutes later, they succeded in catching the red chicken!!!!! This was the funniest commotion that I had come across outside a movie.

British Airways inflight food

Route: Delhi to London Heathrow & further to the USA & return

Description:

I have always been a fan of Breakfast at BritishAirways. In the numerous times I have travelled, I have always looked forward to it. The lunches & Dinners that I have had were mostly good & some memorable. But the breakfast has always scored over the other meals in my mind.

Here comes the latest experience:

breakfast bowl with omelet, kabab, grilled tomatoes & hash brown

The Breakfast consisted of a ‘no frills’ omelet with less salt ( that is always the case in any non Indian setting) & hint of green bell pepper & tiny specs of onion. The Omelet was well done but soft, not brittle & had a simple yet good taste & feel to it.

This was served along with a full Grilled tomato that of course did not have salt added to it.

The Rounded patty of potato was very good – crispy on the outside, soft & lumpy inside. The potato was never fully mashed & hence it was lumpy. Very good.

The meaty kabab was the star of the show. It was not juicy unlike all other good kababs, but dry. It had a Shammi Kabab kind of texture, subtle flavors & taste.

Needless to say that this was accompanied with fresh fruit juice.

A Danish Pastry was served as dessert. It was crispy on the outer, glazed with honey on the top, it seemed to be having millions of layers within & a rich chocolate filling in the center. Liked it a lot.

danish pastry

Hours later it was meal time again. I did something that I never do. I did not request for a Continental cuisine but settled for Butter Chicken – figured out that this is served in Flights ex London Heathrow Airport – It was simply Awesome. One of the best Butter Chickens I have had in maybe the last 2 yrs. Cooked at London Kitchen!!!

butter chicken

I was stunned, shocked (pleasantly) how they cud make it so good. Better than most of the orangish tomatoee Butter Chicken varieties available in Delhi. Perfectly tandoored boneless chicken pieces, perfectly tempered gravy, spicy & a bit hot as well. As good as it cud get. The long grain basmati rice pulao that was served had slices of red chillies on it that were flavorful as well as hot!!! Independent strands of rice but melt in the mouth, flavorful & very tasty.

Totally unexpected & completely out of the blue & realy good. YUMMRAJ was super impressed
