Short description – in case u r in a hurry:
We had heard of this place in BG era….. BG meaning before google (maps, in this context). Went there long back on a rickshaw who made sure he took us thru multiple confusing lanes so that we do not remember the place. Loved the kulfis that time & the memory stuck to us…..

Recently we decided to revisit & travelled all the way from Gurgaon. Got off metro at Chawri bazar station, opened google map & reached the spot where the map showed. There were no kulfiwalas there – some cloth shops, some hardware shops and miscellaneous shops.

Discarded Google & started off with Indian GPS ‘bhaisab Kuremal mohan lal kulfiwale ka dukaan kaha hai?’. Worked like magic & soon we were at the entrance of a lane in which the shop was. There was a massive traffic jam at the entrance coz two cycle rickshaws were trying to enter/exit the gali at the same time & there wasn’t enough space…..commotion followed.

On the way back we saw a similar traffic jam where a maruti omni & scooter were trying to share space!!!

The shop it seemed had got painted & touched up recently & they had a new colorful signage.
The guy at the shop was sitting near the entrance & customers were waling past him inside the small shop. There were few plastic chairs & then there was seating arrangement along the wall.

I was impressed at their not using cheap plastic bowls & spoons. They gave paper made bowls that looked smart along with wooden spoons of a pretty good quality – unlike the cheap bad straight ice cream spoons.

We saw thermocol packing boxes for people to carry back the kulfis home.

The menu card was a 2 pager – pretty colorful. It listed the items on offer by classifying them into different kinds of desserts. The shop guy told us that he had 11 varieties & the rest were not available. We started off one by one & we ended up tasting all 11. It was a marvelous experience.

The guys r just too good when it comes to taste, textures, flavors & presence of natural fruits in the kulfis. Just outstanding. Better than Naturals Connaught place.
Detailed description – in case u hv the time to NJOY reading:
We started with Rabri kulfi. It was thick, intense, milky, a bit high on sweet, not too smooth, not daanedaar. Excellent. Rate it 4.5/5

We moved on to Stuffed mango kulfi. It was a very interesting kulfi. A real mango with skin was slit from the top, the seed scooped out and mango kulfi set inside the empty space thus created. There was a cap (dhakkan) in which the open top of the mango was set.

As we ordered, the guy got up from his seat, picked up a mango kulfi in his hand and a large hammer on the other. He walked to a corner and hit the top with a hammer till the top came off.

He then peeled the mango, cut it into pieces and served it to us.

I have had this kulfi at few other places in delhi NCR but this one was a class apart. The mango flesh and the kulfi were seamless, yet u cud taste elements of both separately. It was a piece of art. Perfect from every respect. Rate it 4.95/5

Next kulfi we had was Jamun. This was not milk based and came under ‘julpeps’ section of the menu card. This was one of the best jamun based desserts I have ever had. The kulfi had chunks of real fruit in it, every drop or piece had intense Jamun taste / flavor, as natural as it cud get, including the astringent feel of jamun. The guy asked us whether we wanted chatpata masala on top and we said yes. That also made it very interesting. Rate it 4.95/5

Next julpep we had was Anar. Again, not milk based. It had flavours of anar. Texture wise it was more like an anar ice. Taste of anar was obvious as well. It was very good on its own but cud not match up to its brethen. Rate it 4/5.

We moved on to milk based Anjeer (fig) kulfi. Creamy, milky, yet having complete Flavor and taste of anjeer in every bite and every drop. The kulfi was daanedaar due to the natural grainy structure of anjeer. Loved it very much and rate it 4.5/5

Next Item we had was lichi. It had real fruit in it and was full of flavours of the real fruit and the taste as well. Awesome is an understatement. Rate it 4.95/5

We then tried Rose kulfi on recommendation by the guy at the shop. This is not a flavor that we Wud have ordered on our own. It was milk based and pink in color – red of the rose and white of the milk. The base was creamy, intense and had a fulsome flavor of rose. This was the best rose dessert I have ever had anywhere. Rate it 4.25/5.

Next came Mango Panna. This one was robust to taste and wud attack the senses as soon as it landed in the mouth. Strong taste and flavor of raw mango, masalas. It has sweet, sour and salt combo with salt being higher than the bottled Aam Panna variants. Super loved it. Rate it 4.5/5

Coconut kulfi was thick, creamy, slightly sweet, had real grated coconut in it. Outstanding to taste. It had similarities to coconut laddoo that is made with milkmaid. Rate it 4.75/5

We tried Fruit cream. This was the weakest of the lot but nevertheless good on its own. It had chunks of real fruit in it. It was good but nothing really stood out. We have had this in other places also. Rate it 3/5

To end it all we had paan kulfi. Once again, or of the best Paan kulfis I have ever had. This one was not overtly sweet like most others. It did not have overdose of paan masala but the base had good amount of Paan leaves. Loved it a lot and rate it 4.5/5

Overall rating of kulfis at Kuremal Mohanlal averages out to 4.53/5. A jewel & pride of Delhi I wud say.
I wud surely venture out here in future. What about u?.
