Comorin (two horizon center, golf course road, gurgaon)

In a NUtshell

Day 1

Being a big fan of Indian accent, went here with huge hopes (chef manish Mehrotra is common to both) – impressed but nowhere close to Indian accent, as different as Honda city & an entry level mercedes. Must mention that this restaurant is much cheaper than Indian accent but that does not make a difference to me. I judge the food based on the food itself – not its price, not its quantity.

Day 2 (a year later)

super impressed with the shorter, focussed, post COVID menu, all 3 dishes we had turned out to be gems & so were the drinks.

Address & other details: comorin

Meal for 2: ₹1000 onwards

Cuisine type : vegetarian & non vegetarian

Short description- in case u r in a hurry

We got to know about this restaurant thru the social media. We had earlier been so impressed with Indian accent & chef manish Mehrotra that we reached comorin almost immediately after relocating back to gurgaon.

The restaurant is huge. Loved the high ceiling & the casual layout of the restaurant. It was full.

We had just walked in without any prior reservation. So we were asked to wait. The other option was to sit in outside smoking area. We chose the latter.

The serving staff was good. A few of them seemed new & a bit out of sync. The elderly gentleman who took orders from us & constantly took care of our food was however a class apart. He practised the classic Old world hospitality. Great talking to him.

The menu card was not very long. It had crisp description of all items.

Food & beverages in general were good. Though the father is the same, the elder brother (Indian accent) is way better than this younger one!!!

Day 2 (post COVID lockdown) – the Johnny at the entrance was trying to act over smart & force us to share our phone numbers. When I challenged him to show which government rule mandated him to ask for it, he fumbled & a senior of his escorted us in without any more trouble.

The restaurant this time had a lot of safety measures in place (sanitized, packed cutlery), servers speaking from a distance. Changing plates often etc.

We were lucky to get the same gentleman serving us. His warmth was overwhelming & always touches. Great conversations with him all thru our stay.

Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

In the menu card there were dishes from different parts of india. We tried two dishes in main course & a dessert. The quantities were huge & every dish came with a cereal & whole host of accompaniments.

Kashmiri palak rishta was good. It had flavours of Palak in every mouthful but it failed to capture the meat flavours at all. The meatballs were good but not great to taste. The texture of Rishta was not great. Rate it 3/5.

The above came with rice & crisp fried lotus stem – nadru.

We ordered Champaran meat with huge hopes. The last time we had eaten this curry was at a friend’s house. Had great memories of champaran meat at Bihar bhawan canteen too.

The meat curry came with sattoo poori, masala garlic, yam chokha.

The sattoo poori was a class apart. It was flavorful, tasted perfect & had an outstanding texture. Rate it 4.95/5

The full garlic in masala was very nice – it’s hard to imagine that the garlic can come up so good. Rate it 4/5.

Yam chokha was super smooth, almost like thick machine made lassi. It tasted very good. I like the hand made, lumpier & uneven chokha better though. Rate it 3.5/5

The meat curry was super fab. We finished off the huge bowl full of gravy till the last drop. Rate the gravy 4.75/5

The meat pieces were not in the best of texture. They were a bit over cooked. They were disintegrating. Taste was good. Rate the meat pieces 2/5.

Average rating of champaran meat is 3.4/5.

Coconut liquado was an outstanding coconut based drink with distinct flavours of coconut. The balance of the drink was perfect. Rate it 4.5/5

For dessert we had Doda treacle tart. I have had the same at Indian accent & I remember being bowled over by it then. Am sure it’s the same recipe but the wow factor was way less. Execution challenges? Maybe.

For the uninitiated, doda is an intense robust sweet eaten in Haryana & adjoins areas. It has milk solids & coconut.

This dish was a fusion of the traditional doda & a tart. It was served with home made ice cream.

Rate the dish 4/5

Loved the robust Homemade kombucha. Excellent. Rate it 4.5/5

Overall rating of food at this restaurant averages out to 4/5.

Wud revisit once more to check out the other dishes on offer.

Day 2 –

Hyderabadi haleem was served with bakharkhani bread. Loved it absolutely. The haleem was one of the finest I have had in the last few years, outside of hyderabad. The meaty flavors perfectly complimented the spice flavors. The texture reminded that of the meat yet it’s softness & mouthfeel was different & wow. The taste was just perfect. Rate it 4.75/5

Raan musallam (goat leg) was absolutely stunning. It looked like bhim’s gada when it was served.

The meat pieces were super juicy & had a strong flavor of both meat & spices. Each bite was just too good. The softness of the meat was optimum. Never had it as good. Rate it 4.95/5

For dessert we had Cheeni malai toast – really? Yes. It was on the menu of comorin & it was outstanding. Wud never have imagined this on a restaurant menu. Super crisp & perfect tasting bread & a rich, thick super malai on that & those amazing crumbs on top. Bowled over. Rate it 4.5/5

Loved the super crisp breads

We also tried a drink – neer more. Chaas (buttermilk) based cocktail. Perfect as a palate cleanser, excellent balance of taste. Too good. Rate it 4.5/5

Overall rating of food at comorin day 2 averages out to 4.7/5

Day 1 & day 2 average out to 4.3/5

Now we look forward to revisiting, to try new dishes
