Short description- in case u r in a hurry
We met chef Megha Kohli many years back when she was working with chef Sabyasachi Gorai. We have been following her Instagram posts over the years though we never met in person after that.
So when we saw megha’s social media post on launch of Mezze mambo, we decided to drop by.
We booked a seat through Zomato. On the scheduled day we arrived & was greeted by a lady on the ground floor. She checked our booking details & showed us a lift to 2nd floor.
We entered the restaurant space to a huge bar in the front. To our left & our right were tables of 4. We got seated next to the window overlooking the park.

The floor above had a live DJ.
The lighting was super dim. We had to read the menu card through our phone photo lens.
The walls were red, fun & quirky.
The menu cards explained each dish in detail. So even if we were not acquainted with some names, we were able to read about them.

The serving staff were good to us. Some of them knew the menu details really well. Some seemed new. In general there seemed to proportionately more staff compared to many other similar sized restaurants. The service was faster & so was the response time to a call.
We visited them twice in almost a month’s time. Food varied from good to great. Nothing was average or bad.
I think I know what kind of food to avoid next time & what to order.
Most of the items seem to be ‘inspired’ by the Mediterranean & not exactly the same.
Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:
Day 1
We loved the messy med eggs – Poached eggs were placed on a bed of Greek yogurt, topped with Shatta, chilli oil, coriander salsa, smoked Bandel cheese, chilli pickle, Garlic crisps and Pita bread.

For the uninitiated, shatta is a middle eastern chilli sauce. Bandel cheese is a kind of robust flavored cheese that is made in a lace from Bandel, near kolkata.
Many ingredients, but they came very well along with each other & complimented each other. Not every flavour, texture or taste was obvious in every bite. Some in some, others in other. Loved the sense of discovery in every bite. We are used to strong flavours of Bandel cheese but it was put in relatively small proportions it seems. So the Bandel cheese flavours were a bit lost. That did not affect the dish at all.
The dish turned out to be absolutely mind blowing. Rate it 4.95/5
Spicy lamb hummus came next. It had pine nuts in it. The hummus was served with pita bread.
We absolutely loved every bit of the hummus. We polished it off till the last bite. Rate the hummus 4.95/5
The lamb mince was less juicy probably because it was lean & had been uniformly machine chopped. The mutton was totally ‘besides the point’. The hummus was alone excellent. Rate the mince 2/5
Overall rating if the dish averages out to 3.5/5

Kebab koobideh was the last savoury dish we had on day 1. My memory says Lavaash by Saby, mehrauli had the same dish. We had the same at Recca mumbai. The koobideh there used to be lumpy, juicy. The ones at mezze mambo were plain in texture & quite dry.

Am not sure but it seemed the kababs had been made earlier & just heated & served. Or they just delayed in serving the kababs though the kitchen had made it in time.
The kababs were good to taste though. Rate it 3/5
For dessert we had Armenian gata puff pastry. This was served with sweetened cheese, cinnamon syrup & berry ice cream!!! The puff pastry was as puffed up as expected. The outer layer was crisp & the inner layer was fluffy & soft. Sweetness was minimal. A pinch of salt balanced the dessert well. Rate it 4.5/5

We also had a drink called Mambo Picante. We asked for a refreshing drink that went with the theme. The bartender suggested mambo picante. The menu card described it as – ‘An Alluring Elixir With Patron Reposado Served in an Old-fashioned Glass. Adorned With Jalapeno and an Edible Flower, It is a Spicy Journey Through an Exotic Paradise.’

The drink came with a chilli in the middle. Loved the balance of the drink. The salt in the rim, the sweet (less) & tangy interplay of taste. The refreshing feel. Excellent. Rate it 4.5/5
Day 2
White wine garlic prawns with cherry tomatoes, rosemary & chillies came on a sizzler plate. The prawns were perfectly cooked, not over cooked, (overcooking, leafing yo rubbery feel is a problem in many eateries in India). Every element of the dish was yumm, including the charred leaf at the base. Perfectly seasoned dish. Rate it 4.75/5

Tabak maaz (double fried Mutton ribs) is a kashmiri dish & we have had this in different places in kashmir, at Matamaal, chor bizarre & more. We were pleasantly shocked when we realized that mezze mambo tabak maaz is the best we have ever had.

The meat was the softest ever, the outer layer was moderately crisp but not too thick. The ribs had almost melted. The taste was as meaty as it could get. The flavours were a smeary as they could get. Rate it 4.95/5
The tabak maaz came with intense labneh & spiced onions.
For main course we ordered Chelow kabab. Anyone who has stayed in kolkata usually has an affinity towards chelo kababs at Peter cat. The chelow kabab at mezze mambo had Iranian lamb kabab, saffron chicken kabab, buttered saffron rice, charred tomatoes, fried eggs.

The kababs were either reheated & served to us or someone delayed in serving the kababs. They were good but not great. Rate the kababs 3/5
The rice was long grain, independent, aromatic but it was sub optimally cooked. The flavours turned out to be good .rate the rice 2/5.
Overall rating of chelow kabab averages out to 2.5/5
For dessert we had Palestinian pound cake. It had caramelized oranges on top, jaggery syrup & palm jaggery Ice cream. The pound cake was excellent. Low on sweet, a hint of salt, not too fluffy, not too tight. Caramelised oranges did magic to the dish.

The ice cream was totally irrelevant & was just an extra – it was almost like giving an umbrella free when you buy a car!!!

Rate the pound cake 4.5/5
Overall rating averages out to 4.1/5
We will revisit to try more options.
