Short description- in case u r in a hurry

We heard about this eatery from the gentleman driving us to mysuru from Bengaluru. He mentioned that there is a place called Bidadi that is full of shops that sell ‘thatte idly’, a kind of idli. He also did mention that he knew the original and the oldest one. We requested him to take us there.

The signage had the year of launch written on it.

The building in which the shop would have started is probably not there anymore or is probably a part of the pucca building.

We sat in a place on which was an open area with the top covered with corrugated sheets.

Like in most crowded low cost eateries, one group does not get a table to themselves and they share a table with strangers.

There was no system of seating based on who came first. It’s based on who spotted an empty seat first or who spotted the ‘earliest potential empty seat’ based on their perception of speed of eating and appetite of those seated and having a meal.

As we sat, we started trying to make eye contact with the guy at the counter. We conveyed our order – there was only one option , a platter of 2 thatte idlies, chutney and one medu vada.

There was hardly any interaction with anyone to comment on service.

Of course there was no menu card

The food was good.

Detailed description- in case u hv the time to njoy reading:

Thatte idly reminded me of a well meaning, tall and handsome well groomed guy I had met, who was pleasant to talk to, for first two sentences but not beyond since he lacked depth in probably every topic.

The idly was huge in size ( larger than the largest idly I have ever come across) , piping hot, super duper soft (softer than the softest idly I have had). It came with a dollop of butter on it.

It however lacked depth….. no flavor, no fermented feel, no character of its own. It was not bad though. Rate the idli 3/5

The chutney was outstanding – one smong the good ones I have had in a few months. Strong, robust, rustic, thick and very nice. Rate the chutney 4.25/5

The medu vada was crisp on the outside, soft within, had mild flavours of daal and was perfect in seasoning. Rate it 4/5

Overall rating of food at thatte idly averages out to 3.75/5

I am unlikely to visit for treating my tastebuds. However Wud visit if I am hungry in Bidar and am looking for something to fill my stomach that does not launch an assault on my tastebuds.

  1. BTW, Thatte Idli is very easy to make at home. Amazon sells the mould – just make it like you would make a normal idli!
