When in mood for a hot lazy winter Sunday morning brunch, why not try making some thin rice noodles (or rice vermicelli) with stir fried fresh veggies & some prawns & scrambled eggs thrown in for good measure………….

….well, u can do without the prawns or the eggs or both or u can substitute the prawns with chicken – whatever be it, u r sure 2 get a load of praise.

Since good food has no set chemical formula, I refuse to list out measurements in grams & mililiitres. I ‘d rather leave it 2 ur interpretation, preference & imagination.

To start with, slice veggies like zucchini, white onions / spring onions, babycorns, pokchoy (Chinese leafy veggie), bell peppers (capsicum) – green, yellow or red or all of them, mushrooms (try the dried black mushrooms)……………… more or less the way it is shown in the pic. Just tear the Pokchoy into pieces with hand before cooking it.

click on the pic, enlarge it & take a look - try 2 cut as close to this as possible

Thinly slice fat cloves of garlic & mince a tiny piece of ginger.

Dimsum Bros, (Ambience Mall, Gurgaon)

In a nutshell:

A definitely new concept eatery & a place to spend a good evening with some outstanding food.

Address & other Details: Dimsum bros, 3rd Floor, Ambience Mall Gurgaon.

outstanding Scallop Sui Mai with caviar

Meal for 2: Rs. 750 onwards

Cuisine type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

unique & fiercely tasty veggies wrapped dimsums

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

As the name suggests, it is a dimsum specialist. As soon as u sit, they serve coated nuts & an ‘out of the world’ garlic sauce – memorable & remarkable. You can order ‘Baskets’ of 6, 8 or 12 dimsums & they are served one after the other, choice of both vegetarian & non-vegetarian. There is a ‘Gourmet’ dimsum menu where costlier ingredients like caviar, smoked salmon, scallops etc are used. There is a ‘premium’ list as well &the rest are called ‘Classic’. We usually finish our dinner just with the excellent dimsums of different varieties. On extra hungry days in the past we have tried the main-course & they have not been disappointing either.

The Monk (Galaxy mall, near 32nd Milestone, NH8, Gurgaon & DLF Place Mall, Saket)

In a nutshell:

Near authentic excellent Chinese & Far East Asian food in Gurgaon

Address & other details: The Monk

the monk

Meal for 2: Rs. 1000 onwards

Cuisine type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian (yes, inspite of being called MONK)

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

The setting is unique – an open restaurant inside a mall – no walls – logically people passing by can peep into ur plate & comment on ur food – However it being a scarcely populated mall, nothing of that sort happens & u can have a really good time with friends & some good food. The Live kitchen is right in part of u & so u can also choose to sit on the kitchen bar on high stools.

Live Kitchen at The Monk

Loved the sweet & salty Crispy duck wontons, enjoyed the outstanding crystal dumpling shrimp, the steamed dumpling prawn with coriander & an excellent baby lamb dumpling with oriental chillies. For the maincourse, we drifted from China to Malaysia & had a mindblowing grilled salmon with penang curry in sticky rice. The dessert was fabulous ‘home made’ coconut caramel ice cream topped with mixed nuts. Red wine poached Rum & raisin ice cream is the best dessert in this place though.

My Chinese friends said ‘this food is 85% original’ during their visit to India. So I guess that speaks a lot.

Eau Chew (12, Ganesh Chandra Avenue, Kolkata)

In a nutshell:

Fabulous Chimney Soup & other mouthwatering Chinese dishes served by a Chinese family in a nondescript restaurant with very nice interiors.

Address & other details: Eau Chew

The showstopper at Eay Chew – Chimney Soup

Cuisine Type: Nonvegetarian & Vegetarian

Meal for 2: Rs. 400 onwards

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

Unless u have a real ‘get weird’ mindset, u will surely miss the restaurant in the first one or two times u pass in front of the place. It has a tiny puny board that hangs atop a narrow door with a long flight of stairs within. The building is inside a erstwhile petrol pump – All that remains are memories of the pump, some new cars parked there & fossils of what used to be goods vehicles at some point in time.

This is what u see from the road – remains of an extinct petrol pump

However, as u enter the restaurant, it is as good as it can get & as authentic as it can get. The place is owned by a Chinese family who run it themselves day in & day out.

As u walk in closer, the signboard is visible

If u order only one dish, let it be the Showstopper Chimney soup. A huge pot of excellent hot piping soup that is good for 2 people at least. In addition to this we had a spicy hot & superb chilly pork, chicken chilli, a very balanced sweet & sour honey lemon chicken, a second best – fish in Chilli black bean, a very good hakka mixed meat mein foon (rice noodle) & a fairly good speciality – Josephine’s noodles.

The stairway to heaven (foodie’s heaven)

Tiretti Bazar: Home-made food sold by Chinese migrants on the streetside (near Poddar Court, Kolkata).

In a nutshell:

Wow way to start a day – outstanding, refreshing & authentic homemade Chinese food at unbelievably low prices.

How to reach there: Take a left (if u r facing Girish park) after crossing Central Metro station (bowbazar) crossing & ask for tiretti bazar.

Meal for 2 – Rs. 60 onwards (breakfast available only)

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

As u walk into this sleepy place in the morning (6.30 am to 8.30 am), u come across lines of mini trucks on both sides of the road & groups of street dwellers taking bath at the roadside taps.

as u enter the road to tiretti bazar in the morning

A little beyond u see a glimpse of a market – flowers, vegetables, women’s purses!!! etc & then suddenly large aluminum vessels that stand out oddly amidst these. As u walk towards those vessels, u realize that the people manning those look very different from everyone u see around. Yes, they r Chinese immigrants who have been stayin in Kolkata for decades. They sell home-made food in this market in the morning & do odd jobs during the day. They speak Mandarin, Hindi, Bengali & very good English!!!!

first view of the market

To get the maximum choice in terms of menu, u have 2 reach as early as possible coz 7.30 onwards the good items start getting sold out. As compared to the other days, on Sundays u get the best variety.

The sight of aluminum storage amidst veggie vendors

Outstanding dimsums – pork, chicken, fish, bao buns with pork filling/ chicken fillings , unique & superb fish, chicken & pork balls in soup (clarification – these r balls made out of minced meat – in case u r frowning on the kind of organs that people feed on these days)………………….. these r so good that ur hand starts automatically going towards ur mouth without specific instruction from the brain!!!!……………….result – u r overfed in the morning itself

the awesome dimsums

Some people sell normal momos as well. Some sell home-made sausages that u need to go home & cook. Chinese raw veggies r also sold here – including pokchoy, Chinese spinach etc. Chinese prawn papads etc are also sold here.
