Eggspectation (Jaypee Vasant Continental, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi)

In a nutshell:

Its one place where they put all eggs in one ‘basket’ – your plate.

Eggspectation – The Dining Hall

Address: Eggspectation.

Meal for 2: Rs. 1000 onwards

Cuisine Type : Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Short Description – In case u r in a hurry:

We went to this place many years back when we got to know that they serve Eggs Benedict. Loved it then & somehow never managed to get back again.

The Restaurant serves as the Coffee Shop of the Vasant Continental Hotel. However Eggspectation is a Canadian Chain Restaurant that started in 1991 that crossed the border & forayed into the US & of course came all the way to India as well.

The theme as u can guess by this time is eggs & there are many innovative & unusual dishes around eggs with equally interesting names like eggkuri, eggchiladas, eggstravaganza, an omelette called eggspectation & so on. Of course, for people who are not too fond of eggs, there r dishes without eggs too.

The service was good last time when I went at around 11.00 am. This time we were there at 9.00 am & it was peak hours for breakfast buffet for the guests of the hotel. It seems that is the reason why the staff were less attentive & slow in executing the orders. They did not positively contribute to the breakfast experience at all.

The ambience was nice with two prominent huge figurines of clowns – one male & the other female. The male is in the act of juggling – eggs!!!!!

The Juggler juggling eggs!!!!

The kitchen is open & see thru. U can in fact walk up there & have a little chit chat with the chef & his team.

The Shiraz Nostalgia

Amongst all the golden memories of my college days in Kolkata, the one thing that consistently churns up is Shiraz Golden Restaurant in Circus Avenue, Park Circus. All our random parties or any special party for that matter (for example Holi, Diwali or even Durga Puja!) was necessarily powered by Mutton Biriyani, Chicken Chaap and Firni (an Indian Dessert made with milk and powdered Basmati rice with Saffron) from Shiraz. Each one of us would be handed over one packet of Mutton Biriyani each and one piece from the Chicken Chaap to start with… and would end with forever licking the spoons that scooped out the mildly aromatic Firni (a dessert) set in an earthen small pot! The same menu was repeated at every occasion when friends would meet and Mums would refuse to host a mini impromptu parties.

Even today when we go to Kolkata, the same menu from the same Shiraz is waiting either for us at some of our friends’ houses or at our Kolkata home for others who visit us!

Most of the Bengalis that I have met, associate Biriyani, specially the Mughlai cooking with the Lucknowy or the Awadhi style of cooking. Hence, as much as we love the various kinds of Biriyani – the Hyderabadi, the Sindhi, the Pakistani Biriyanis, our taste-buds still search for Shiraz’s Biriyani. Though there is no dearth of Indian restaurants in Dubai, there was definitely a dearth of Indian restaurants which could satiate the Mughlai food nostalgia for those who grew up in Kolkata.

Well, till Shiraz Golden Restaurant came to the shores of Dubai, all the way from Kolkata. Till then some dishes occurred only in my dreams. For example – the Kolkata Kathi Rolls! Or the Mughlai Parathas!

Royal China (Eros Corporate Towers, 16th Floor, Nehru Place, New Delhi)

In a nutshell:

Delicious & ‘almost real’ Chinese Cuisine served in a nice ambience.

The interiors

Address & other details: Royal China

Cuisine type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Meal for 2: Rs. 1000 onwards

Short description : In case u r in a hurry:

Chinjabi lovers, beware. This is the real thing & u may not like some of it as much. Those who have developed a taste for the real thing will however have a ball of a time.

The Restaurant looks like any other high end restaurant I have come across in Hongkong & China. The restaurant with full Glass walls, being located in a Highrise enables u to enjoy the view of the city while dining. Ambience is nice & enjoyable.

The staff seems to have been a major issue when the restaurant started – as I have been told by some friends. However, on the two anonymous visits (I did not divulge my identity) to this place, I had a good experience on this front. In fact the guy named Suneil who served us on both the occasions, was extraordinarily good at his job. He was very well versed with the products on offer & made some good suggestions that enlivened our dining experience. In absence of Suneil, another guy popped in for 5 minutes & he was surely a disaster. So, I guess staff training still needs to b prioritized by the Management.

The food & overall experience was so memorable that we returned back for some more in a short span of 10 days.

Sheesha Sky Lounge (C21 Mall, Vijaynagar , Indore)

In a nutshell:

Cool hangout place with friends & family, good food in general topped up with some real masterpieces.

Address & other details: Sky Lounge

Sheesha Sky Lounge

Cuisine type: Vegetarian & Nonvegetarian

Meal for 2: Rs. 500 onwards

Short description – In case u r in a hurry:

The first time I went to this place I was super impressed. I was pleasantly surprised again on my second visit as well.

A part of the interiors of this Lounge is for obvious reasons, in lounge style with sofas etc in Indian detailing. On another side there are few open cubicles with interesting seating in which a group of five to ten can easily sit around a table & talk to each other face to face while enjoying the food & beverages. There is normal restaurant seating in another section as well.

The first time we went to the restaurant, it was 7.00 pm. The place was quite empty for almost an hour & looked spacious. The second occasion we reached at about 9.00 pm. The place was jam packed & fully alive. Liked both the occasions. Love the lamp shades here as that dramatically livens up the otherwise brown, beige & white interiors.

the cool lamp shades at Sheesha Sky lounge

The waiting staff is quite warm & knowledgeable. Service is reasonably in time. Not too fast , not too late. Both the occasions I found that the ‘order’ in which we ordered the food was followed.

The menu card is very tastefully done.

The menu card

The food is good. There are sure instances of trying to do some things differently. Some of the food I found to be outstanding.

Sheesha was not served due to the new Government regulation.

How to get there: If u r facing Jaipur on NH8 at Rajeev Chowk Crossing, turn right. Keep going straight tiil the road narrows down. Chinese Seafood Noodle soup

This is a part of the series ……. For the Chef in u

Contributed by YUMMRAJ’s favourite Chef ANONYMOUS
Super easy to make & Super good to eat……………

On his fifteenth visit to Hongkong, YUMMRAJ suddenly came across noodle soup by sheer chance – serendipity. He liked it the first time & eventually liked it so much that he had five different versions of the same in four days of his stay. What struck me was the fact that supposedly this takes less than a minute to cook!!!!!

Healthy n tasty Chinese style noodle soup

I got only the stories sitting back in India.

So it was my turn to try out something of that kind so that at least I have an idea of how it tastes. Thus began my playing around with ingredients & hence this post.

Well, post that tiny story of mine, lets get to the cookology.

In Hongkong, almost any kind of seafood or meat slice is put into the soup. Sitting in land-locked Gurgaon, I did not have access to a variety of fresh seafood – so had to do with just prawns & fish. I chose betki. U may choose river sole or red snapper as well.

the seafood for noodle soup

U can also add thin strips of lamb/ chicken / tenderloin.

Marinate the prawns & fish chunks (as shown in the picture) in rice wine vinegar & soya sauce. Use white vinegar in case u cannot get rice wine vinegar.
