Yummraj’s favourite Kashmiri food joint opened a restaurant. Team Yummraj paid a visit and here is what they found:

The restaurant is actually a shop in a mall ( shopping complex) converted to a restaurant. The shopping complex that day was pretty empty and hence parking was a cakewalk.

The restaurant had a small cash counter at the left near the entrance. A little further there was a rack with cutlery and artefacts.

Half of the shop seemed to be the kitchen.

For guests there were only two tables with four chairs each.

The furniture design was minimalistic but made from good varnished wood.
A chandelier added value to the interiors.

There was one person manning the restaurant. At first the guy did not seemed too happy about guests walking in at 9 pm as he mentioned that all others had left. It appeared as if he wud not serve but he did. The guy did not seem to have basic training of how to serve cutlery, water etc. The guy became normal after a while when he found that the guests were not put off by his cold behaviour.
However all said, food was outstanding as usual and this overshadowed the funny experience.
Detailed description – in case u hv the time to njoy reading:
First dish was kabargah. We have fond memories of outstanding kabargah at Matamaal. However this evening we were surprised to find no salt in kabargah. The shapes of the pieces was Less uniform than what we have had b4. The restaurant was yet to learn plating techniques – things that will now be needed in a restaurant. However, the quality of meat was good – much better than in Wazwan dilli haat.

On adding salt it tasted very good but not as good as the ones we had b4. Rate it 4/5 otherwise but for the salt revise the rating down to 3.5/5.

Masc (minced meat dumplings in red gravy) was excellent to taste. Nice aroma of ghee along with hing and saunf. Rate it 4.75/5.

We also tried our favourite Monje haak. It was exactly the same Known taste and flavour. No difference from the dish ordered at home. Outstanding. A simple yet delicious vegetarian dish without any spices ‘in the face’. Rate it 4.5/5

Nadur yakhni was curd based gravy of nadur ( lotus stem / Kamal kakdi). It was again a flavourful curd based gravy. Flavour of ghee made its presence felt. The nadur used was good. Rate it 4.5/5

Rice served was of good quality. Much better than usually available in similar restaurants in delhi NCR.
The server gave us some mooli ki chutney which simple but nice. Also some Kashmiri achaar which could not be enjoyed as it did not have any salt.

We were served Complimentary phirni as it was a launch phase of the restaurant. Was nice but low on amount of milk used. So the intense milk flavour of Phirni was less. Was very good nevertheless. Rate it 4/5.

Overall rating of Matamaal restaurant averages out to 4.25/5
Wud revisit for sure and hope that all service related things are fixed by then….
Nice review. It appears that team yummraj pays a surprise visit, which adds to the value of the review.
thanks:) always pay surprise visits & always pay for the food
Thank you very much for coming to the restaurant and providing your feedback in the review. We are glad the quality of our food was consistent with your past experiences.
After years of hard work and dedication to Kashmiri cuisine, we finally realized our dream of having a small restaurant in January this year. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us as it has identified key areas of improvement. We understand that more work is needed to bring our place to its full potential. We will address all the issues mentioned and continue to work hard and improve.
We hope that your next experience at matamaal will remind you of the pleasant memories at your nani’s house.
That sounds great. Look forward
